FIIIIIIINALLLY a post pandemic thingy!!!!

I’ve got a new theatre thing, TIME INSIDE, and it’s happening at THE REYKJAVIK FRINGE FESTIVAL in July 2021!

If you in Iceland round then stop on by. Here’s the schpeel …

Ever wondered what it’s like to be a prisoner, an inmate, a jailbird, a con, a lag, a lifer, a nirk?

Wanna get a taste from the safety and comfort of your own theatre seat?

Time Inside is like time inside, it’s what you make of it …

The aim is not entertainment — it’s experience.

NOISE N’ ROSES 07 … equally noisy and rosy! The underground live experimental music/audio crew, Lucia, Rozi, and Pete, AKA Noise n’ Roses, held their 7th event at our space — shit ton of people, sweet sounds, good vibes = great success! 👍 They also commissioned yours truly to do a little sumthin. Not naturally being a live music maker I freaked out a bit on what to do. Ironically I came up with an idea really quickly, that involved basically no set up, and was the easiest thing I’ve ever performed. Ironic coz usually my stuff takes years to construct, is tech and prep and expense heavy, and very complicated to perform, yet this piece actually seemed to get the best feedback of anything I’ve done!!! Is someone trying to tell me something …?

FEBRUARY 2ND 2020

Got my 2nd 3rd 4th & 5th stick and poke tattoos @ our stick and poke ‘festival’ @ our space Szeszgyár (ex Sunview B) ... a stupid crazy success: shitloads of people, all chill, no clicky cool scene vibes, just peeps doing nice for and on one another. We even had a whole family — husband did first tat on wife and then she and 2 kids all gave him a dot tat! Really feels what our space is all about, no money, sharing what ya dig, open to all and anything.

THANK YOU tho those who did them: Horváth M. Naomi, Fanni Paulik, Anna Margit and ... me (major quality drop there but oh well)! Heart truly humbled ... and by upcoming events: motorcycle club meeting, documentary screening & talk (women’s empowerment in Afghanistan), Anna’s vegan cooking classes, and live electronica noise night (where I’ll perform!). Love and joy #community #stickandpoke #tattoos #humblepie @ Szeszgyar - A hely

OH YES! The next Szeszgyar event, and first work officially co-created by co-founders St. John ‘Showbiz’ Chippie and Anna ‘Zippy’ Pedgey:

X-MAS TREES X-POSED!

We’ve been dragging in and filling our space with xmas trees from the street, some covered in much dog pee, for, on the 24th of January, we are going to tell their stories. An exhibition and performance by me, ‘The Tour Guide’, it goes like:

Friday, 24th January, 2020, at 4 PM – 9 PM

2 days from now · -5–1°C Mostly Sunny

These beautiful christmas trees were used, abused, then put out on the street — now they have been brought in to Szeszgyar (formerly Sunview B) to speak … for one day only!

18 trees will be inside the space, and our Certified-Christmas-Tree- Translator©️ will give you a tour of meeting the pines and translating their stories into human English.

4-8pm: Tours (stay as long as you like)
8-8:55: Farewell drinks with trees
9pm: Trees go back out on the street

Let there be one last Christmas miracle.

And they said .... OPEN! A members-run art venue and community space -- meaning it will be both theater AND soup kitchen, artist's residency AND meeting house, cinema AND meditation center -- while always being a friendly neighbour. Most of all Sunview B is an approach, a system of doing things differently, a place for people to come together that has a foundation of free expression with zero financial gain. Sunview B -- ‘B’ as in ‘the second’ (the original Sunview is in New York City), ‘B’ as in ‘Budapest’ (the original Sunview is in New York City ... wait, we said that), and ‘B’ as in ‘Bea’ (the beautiful owner of the building that houses the original Sunview ... which is in you-know-where ... may she be looking down with joy from her sunny Greece in the sky)

This story from my old friend Jim Hickcox

the other day is one I still can't quite compute, but it sure helps put the fire in my ass as I overhaul the piece! To whit:

"Hi! I was at Sundance last week and a guy at a party who didn't know I knew you started talking about this play, ‘Afterbirth’, which I didn’t know. I was just chatting with these dudes at a party and I don't remember what we were talking about exactly because I'm prone to tuning out. But he transitioned into talking about this show and it sounded amazing. He has a friend who'd seen it? He hadn't himself. But it had travelled. Anyway he talked about it and I was like "this shit sounds incredible" and then some other dude was like "is this the guy that poured shit on his head?" And I was like "ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT STJOHN?".

I was very excited. So good. You're probably the best artist I know. Man, his description of it - it sounds like you really scandalized your audience, which, in 2018 (or roundabouts) is so nearly impossible."

Thank YOU, Jim Hickcox one of the best artists I! know!

Here’s what people said:

“It was provocative, extremely upsetting, and deeply vulnerable — and it was GOOD ART.”

"I think he pulled it off, but maybe we wish he hadn’t."

“Premature, poorly executed, and selfish. He subjected the audience to cruelty, it was fucked up.”

“(Next day) I’m still traumatized and can’t stop replaying it in my head. It was what I was hoping for, though after the show I ate nearly a pint of ice cream.”

“I felt like I was part of a social experiment to test who would intervene and stop the show.”

"I wouldn’t say this if I didn’t mean it, and I don’t say this to people, but I think he may be an artistic genius.”

“I went outside with my friends to discuss whether we should ‘pull the plug on this guy’, like literally pull the power and shut this down.”

“Brave very, very … brave.”

Why did I put myself through this? Was it a good or a bad thing I did, making so many people feel that terribly — enough that a good third of the audience walked out? Well, at least money was raised! $466 raised for the LEFSA organization, helping NYC homeless, many people victims of domestic abuse, and must be noted: a third of NYC homeless are children.

AFTERBIRTH IS COMING OUT!
I’ve written, directed and will perform a new live show September 14/15 that I’ve been working on kinda my whole life. Part monologue, part re-enactment, part live phone call, ‘Afterbirth’ is all-reality and deals with issues for our fractious times: abuse of women, parents being estranged from their kids, trauma, memory. Definitely not as rosy as Iron Man 7, but I absolutely guarantee you will not be bored!

The third in the 'We're All in the Same Bucket' series and the final performance art work by St. John as he's a pretty shit performance artist. This one tackles gender and has Jess and Lorraine, fellow members of the art collective 'ADA', dunk St. John in his own spunk. All explanation is in the video itself!

This post-TG Saturday come get some real love, after being thoroughly bummed out and confused by your Trump-loving fam! St. John, Tim, and Jess (Sintimjess) are gonna have another dope show at The Sunview Luncheonette in Greenpoint, but this time we're stepping up the game -- no showing old work. Fuck that. For you to really heal you need the most piping-hot, oven-stinking, face-hugging ... NEW WORKS!

This is work that hasn’t been seen by anyone else but the crews, and those people live in underground bunkers with their eyes and tongues gouged out!

TIM - Gonna talk about making his feature doc on Chelsea Manning and show the trailer (no one's seen the trailer except the people who made it, and they've mysteriously ‘disappeared' — even Tim himself aint seen it!).

JESS -- Gonna show her still-in-post doc about Chinese tourists taking over the tiny island of Palau (which is a follow up to her last doc about Chinese malls taking over the world, which won all awards and shit).

ST. JOHN -- Gonna have (and film) a live auction of family heirlooms to raise money for his New York dating life (getting laid aint cheap, yo, so bring $$$).

After the show we’ll go to a local bar and heal some more. Be there or be crazy!

WHY:
Because love, of course. No more trails of tears.

Stupid super psyched to be putting on a one manish multi media kinda thing, 'CUCK', at Triskelion Arts (say it fast three times ... actually, say it slowly once) in FEBRUARY 2018. Stay tuned!

Now I'm officially a member of The Sunview Luncheonette Collective I have found myself organizer of the Twin peaks Sunday night sessions. Bless the lord.

TWIN PEAKS SUNDAYS
Sweet night at Sunview Twin Peaks Dinerluncheonette Sunday. Pie and coffee had (but mostly beer) by the many people watching people watch a glass box that killed them. Looking like it's gonna be an every Sunday thing ... All welcome. Owls what they seem.

PREVIEW FOR A MAJOR WORK TO COME, MAJOR. WORK.

NB: THIS IS A PREVIEW FOR A FEATURE FILM THAT IS IN PRODUCTION. Suicide Mondays, a feature documentary by St. John McKay (Smith), combines the subjects of the fimmaker's almost suicide, the men's movement known as 'the manosphere' -- into which the filmmaker will 'infiltrate', and the rise of the right in politics across the globe, through a film mash up of documenting events as they unfold, staged re-enactment, several performance pieces made specifically for the film, and video sourced from the bowels of the internet. So far it has received a $5000 grant from Rooftop Films, and hopes to be completed in 2018.

DARKS OF HEARTNESS, great success! Thanks to all who made the day that I wish was every day.

MY AND BUD'S FILM SCREENINGS! APRIL 20, SUNVIEW LUNCHEONETTE

Thursday, April 20 at 8:30 PM - 11 PM

Sunview Luncheonette

221 Nassau Ave, Brooklyn, New York 11222

3 documentary filmmakers. 4 films. 1 luncheonette. Unknown quantity of snacks.

You are cordially invited to a wee private night of films by Jessica Kingdon, Tim Hawkins, and St. John McKay, their latest and semi-latest documentaryish works that are on timely issues. This will be held at the fantabulous Sunview Luncheonette in sunny Greenpoint, a former diner now art venue for those of you who doth not know its charms.

Not a big screen, not a big fancy do, just a nice get together. We’ll talk about the films after we show them if you have any questions, otherwise we’ll just drink away our nervousness at baring our very souls for your cold judgment. Beer and wine will be there for you, maybe a bottle of whiskey or something, and I guess some snacks. Americans love to snack. Try and RSVP so we know how much stuff to buy for you. We gotta be out hard at 11 so any adventure minded can continue on somewhere else until we die.

Here are trailers for the films for you to peruse.
(warning: St. John’s films NSFW. Luckily you will not be at work. But you’ve been warned. Yes, you.)

Rough Schedule:

9pm
Tim Hawkins https://vimeo.com/timtravershawkins:
'SURPRISEVILLE’ (a beautiful study of a gated community in Surprise, Arizona)
https://vimeo.com/18084768

9:30pm
Jessica Kingdon http://jckbox.com/:
'LOOKING AT ANIMALS' (a beautifully horrifying study of animals on view)* (*Jess reserves right to change film without notice)
https://vimeo.com/100860371

10pm
St. John McKay http://asinsmith.com/:
'WE'RE ALL IN THE SAME BUCKET' 1 & 2 (2 horrifyingly horrific studies of economic inequality and climate change)
https://vimeo.com/202316613
https://vimeo.com/210160792

WE'RE ALL IN THE SAME BUCKET Durational, site-specific, public performance. (From the series, ‘We’re all in the Same Bucket’.) HUMANS VS EARTH ’In the 21st century it will be very likely that there will be wars fought over water. Not oil. For there are substitutes for oil. But there is no substitute, WHATSOEVER, for water." - Bill Cooper, Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, UCI Irvine 'We're all in the Same Bucket: Humans vs Earth' is a simple, 5 minute public performance, dealing with climate change, specifically focusing on imminent water shortages. We know the future, we make action movies about it: the world is desert, the tops of our great skyscrapers poke up from the sea. Yet we continue as we are. Our children will look back at us in horror, at our insanity. And we know it, NOW. Yet I, along with most of us, keep drinking water from plastic, eat meat, burn non renewable resources. And will, until the day I’m forced to drink my own urine, cannibalize children, roam in packs at night to avoid the blazing sun … Well, that’s what the movies I watch for entertainment say, anyway. A COUPLE OF LINKS TO WATCH (specifically about water, to zero in one one aspect of climate change) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=meXnifcAwN8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EXZduDnHvIg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LiQNx_QiIuI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0UIevALG3hs CREDITS performer/editor/camera ST. JOHN MCKAY (SMITH)
WE'RE ALL IN THE SAME BUCKET Durational, site-specific, public performance. (From the series, ‘We’re all in the Same Bucket’.) 'MAIN' ST. VS 'WALL' ST. "There's enough for everybody's need in the world, but not enough for their greed." - Gandhi 'We're All in the Same Bucket: Main St. vs Wall St.', is a 72 hour performance dealing with economic inequality. These are realities: Eight men own more wealth than the poorest half of the world owns collectively. It would take a counter worker at Starbucks or McDonald's six months work, full time, to make what the CEO of either of these companies makes in a single hour. The yearly bonuses given out on Wall St are equal to double what all the minimum wage earners make in the rest of the country over the year, combined. Just the bonuses. One in nine people on earth is undernourished, while the wedding of England's Prince William cost thirty four million dollars. Fuck that. By some ways of measuring humans may arguably be in a better place than ever in history, but, man oh man, does it still suck for most. And what is at the heart of so much of what the privileged gripe about? The crime, the terrorism, the cartels, the wars, the refugees -- are these people the haves or the have nots? Ask a street dealer in a New York neighborhood ghetto if he or she wouldn't rather use their hustling skills down on Wall Street, where the cops aren't busting you, they're protecting you. And then ask them why they're on that street corner and in not that corner office. It goes beyond racism. It's class, it's the concentration of wealth and power, it's greed. The thing is, there's enough for EVERYONE. Every single human being, all at once, to have plenty, PLENTY -- much more than is needed for everyone to be happy and fulfilled, not hungry and with decent housing and health, AND STILL there'd be enough so the rich and powerful can be really, really, really rich, and really, really, really powerful. The rest of us don't want much, not much at all. We are not consumed with materialism, with lust for power. But, as one chap from Pakistan said to me the other day, 'The wealthy just want to be gods.' But, aren't gods meant to be merciful? Gods want their disciples to be content, they understand their happiness depends on the happiness of those below, as they are in an ecosystem. Surely they know that making the common people so utterly desperate only leads to the Visigoths and the pitchforks and the guillotine? But, as history shows, greed turns all gods into bastards. performer/editor/camera day 0-1 ST. THE SICKEST PERFORMANCE I'LL EVER PROBABLY DO HAS BEEN DONE. NOW YOU CAN KNOW IT EXISTS AND NEVER SEE IT. RIP BELINDA

NB: THIS IS A TRAILER. TO VIEW FULL PERFORMANCE FILM, PLEASE MESSAGE IN VIMEO, OR EMAIL stjohnsmith@gmail.com. A VAGINA BY ANY OTHER NAME WOULD SMELL AS SWEET: a performance Performance, 2016 9:10 WARNING: Extremely graphic and disturbing imagery A mock version of a ‘meet in the street’ porn video, where a man will meet an ‘unsuspecting’ woman and lure her into sex. Due to the utilitarian nature of the women in these videos, in that their sole purpose appears to be a thing with holes to stick a penis into, I thought: ‘Why not substitute her with any old thing?’ So I did. A roadkill prairie dog. We named her Belinda. This is a performance that is not anti-porn as a concept, but anti-porn culture AS IT HAS BECOME -- misogynist, racist, violent, hateful, exploitative. I do not believe in censorship, however this does not mean there can be no critique, no belief in something becoming harmful, no attempt at protest or trying to shed light in dark corners. And internet porn culture is dark, indeed. Dark corners run by white males. Here are some of the titles for videos on just the ONE PAGE I use for this performance: 'Skinny redhead has her tight snatch destroyed'; 'Foxy blond bint has her twat drilled'; 'Beautiful ebony babe has her pussy stretched' That's vaginas. How about power: 'Super nervous first timer gets settled by cock'; 'Submissive comeshot compilation. That's why I am the BOSS' Or race: 'Monster black shaft for a petite slut'; 'Petite ethnic teen fucked and takes cream pie'; 'Hot ebony minx rides on BBC (Big Black Cock)' Or pseudo crime: 'Exploited black teens compilation.' Or sites advertised on the page: 'Beat the Pussy up'; 'PunishTube.com' In a time when slut shaming is rampant, women who speak up get threatened in the most vile and violent terms, and feminism is a dirty word, a time when a man who brags about 'grabbing women by the pussy' gets elected President of the United States (and these are in the societies where women are doing WELL, where they are equal citizens and have voice) then you have to wonder what the porn culture is doing for the minds and attitudes of people being raised on it. Not that there's ever really been a 'great' time for women, in any culture.

how do you spend your birthday? under a blanket on a city street, of course!

For my birthday December 9th (sweet 16) I did not want to have a drink in a Brooklyn bar, in fact I'd rather kill myself. I need to do productive or interesting stuff. So, the day went thus: saying a final goodbye to my girlfriend in the morning (who has just dumped me but gave me one last birthday night eve of joy), doing my first public (non gallery) performance in the afternoon, doing my second only ever stand up open mic at night, and feeding my roommate's cat when I got home. I also threw my new pack of cigarettes in the garbage this morning. Click photo for video.

New sinsmith radio trilogy, 'crapping on culture', below

Three new pieces in the Sinsmith Radio library, having been worked on throughout the year. Sinsmith radio has evolved to the point where I have come to some key restrictions on their creation, namely:

- I want to do trilogies on one theme.

- Preferably one show is pretty much all me narrating, one show is half shared with others, and one is pretty much all someone else' story.

- Music and sound effects must not be merely to support the talking, making it more 'pleasant', rather they must almost act as characters in themselves, and have a definite relevance to the theme of the piece.

- If possible, the subject matter of the piece dictates the structure of the piece, e.g. If the show is about, say, a protest rally, the structure of the show will mimic the structure of a protest rally (repetition, ebb and flow, etc.)

This means, of course, the very short pieces (14-20 minutes) are extremely laborious to make, each taking hundreds of hours of work. So ... enjoy!!!

Met this person from London going through a box of clothes outside my stoop. There were some good clothes.

I knew her for about 60 hours before she got on a bus to Chicago. Took some pics at dawn of her in a red dress (below pic).

Her performance art (top pic) puts any of my 'brave' work to shame, but I was happy to show her my Shame. It felt like a special run in. She's left me full of fire up my ass to do things.

You entered her place through a hole in the door.
